Military Bereavement in Education Project by Scotty's Little Soldiers

At the project's inception, an ideation led us to the creation of a name, StandBy, which emerged as a compelling suggestion. Its significance resonated on multiple levels: first, as a collective commitment to stand by the child(ren), offering unwavering support; second, drawing from its military connotation, where "stand by" signifies readiness to take action while awaiting further instructions. This dual meaning encapsulated the project's ethos of steadfast support and readiness for action, laying a strong foundation for the endeavour ahead.

In crafting the visual identity for this project, we created a palette of greens, a colour synonymous with the military. Also the use of purple, traditionally linked to bereavement and grief yet also symbolising the unity of tri-service colours, was a poignant choice, reflecting both solemnity and solidarity. Our selection of colours aimed to evoke a sense of solidarity and tranquility. These colours, imbued with their military heritage, were meticulously adapted to resonate across a diverse audience spectrum, from Early Years children to educators. Additionally, we deftly integrated elements of the Scotty's brand, forging a seamless association with the parent organisation, Scotty's Little Soldiers. The design elements, while maintaining a calm and neutral demeanour, were infused with a playful touch, aligning with the charity's vibrant and welcoming ethos, ensuring resonance with children and young people while honouring the project's military roots.

In concluding this poignant project, the creation of a visual identity for the StandBy project stands as a testament to the power of design to convey empathy, inclusivity, and support. Through the strategic use of military colours and integration of the Scotty's brand, we forged a connection between sensitively supporting children and young people and the warmth and friendliness emblematic of Scotty’s Little Soldiers, reinforcing the project’s foundation within the charity’s overarching mission to provide relief of the effects of bereavement on children and young people that have experienced the death of a parent who served with the British Armed Forces.
